Sneek-peek week draws to a conclusion today. Here is a glimse of my most recent book, A Battle of Wills, which documents imbalances of power and accountability between the UK government and its citizens. It's not finished yet, changes need to be made. As soon as it's complete I'll put up more photos.

Sneek-peeks continue today, with a quick look at a booklet I've produced called Rule Britannia, which is a collection of rules gathered from recent news stories, some of which have been featured right here on this very blog. I'll end sneek-peek-week tomorrow with a look at a book I've been producing recently.

Time for the second sneek-peek at some of my recent university projects. Rules for Snow is a screen-printed business sized card with some basic rules for snow I created after my recent experiences of trying to navigate snow covered pavements. It's just a bit of fun, but handy nonetheless.

I handed in all of my recent work at university yesterday, without any hitches I'm pleased to say. That marks the end of preparing for self-directed study and the beginning of actually doing it, which is exciting. This week I'll be putting up sneek-peeks at a selection of some of the work I handed in. First up is my zine documenting where rules have failed people in international sport, featuring Thierry Henry and the Irish football team and mean old cricketer Greg Chappel and his unfortunate brother who had to do his evil bidding.

The snow is showing little regard for my rapidly approaching deadline. I had to walk a couple miles through the snow to get to the printers today, and on my way took a couple of photos of people enjoying the snow more than I was. And I fell over a couple of times. If the buses don't run tomorrow, and I can't get into the screen-printing department I might get very angry at the snow! Flickr set here.

A couple weeks ago I sent a letter asking a few questions to living letterpress legend Jack Stauffacher. I wanted to hear his thoughts on current letterpress practice and how things have changed. This morning I recieved a reply from him which is amazing. He kindly answered my questions and with them he sent me an article he'd written and a small booklet of some wood-type prints he created, which is very cool. I'm honoured and very grateful for his time and thoughts. Thanks Jack!

A few weeks ago I got involved with a Kickstarter project by artist/designer Sam Winston. His Dictionary Story is a wonderful little exploration of words that is both fascinating for a designer like myself and great fun for anyone with an interest in words, stories and language. The funding project was successful and yesterday my copy of the book arrived. It's such a nice object, and great to finally hold after seeing it in Grafik when I first started my degree a couple years ago. Thanks Sam!

On Saturday I visited the fantastic Minnie Weisz Studio in St Pancras in London. The lovely Minnie kindly let me visit her and meet the artist Tom Foulsham, who realises near impossible ideas into contraptions. Most fascinating is his Wiggle Table, which takes news feeds or user generated input and translates it into words by wiggling a surface under a pen, held by the user. It's hard to describe, and this video does a much better job of it than I ever could. Thanks very much to Minnie and Tom for letting me come down — Flickr set here.

After my visit to the Alan Kitching show yesterday I walked over to the Design Museum to have a look around the Dieter Rams show, Less and More. Being a child of the 80s I was well aware of the simple beauty of Braun products, but I was only recently made aware of the man behind the beauty. The products there are extremely wide-ranging, from televisions to shavers, shelving systems to lighters. They all have in common a stark simplicity, pure functionality and a genuine desirability. It's a great show, check it out — Flickr set here.

On display is a range of the prints they have produced at the Typography Workshop over the last 20 years. Not surprisingly, the work is amazing, interesting and almost impossible to figure out in terms of how they did it. Printing yellow on black paper and getting yellow? God knows. However he did it, it's a fantastic show and well worth checking out.

This morning in the post I received possibly the best thing I've ever received in the post; a selection of letterpress work by Desmond Jeffery and Libertad Gosling, his partner for many years. I've been in regular contact with Libertad since the Late Letterpress show at St. Bride which I blogged about last month. It's been great to chat with her about her and Desmond's work, and it's been a real honour to learn from her wisdom on the subject of letterpress. So generous is Libertad that she sent me an extensive selection of their work that illustrates the scope of their talents as printers. My photos do not do the work justice, but here are a couple anyway. Thanks Libertad!

I entered more than one design, here is a glimpse of one of my submissions. My view of the film is that of a power struggle between the various different characters within and outside of the Corleone family. Like any good boxing bout, the winner is somewhat of an underdog, which lead me to the approach I took with this poster. It was taken using a pinhole camera with a 6 month exposure, between December 19, 2007 and June 21, 2008 which are the winter and summer solstices. Taken by Justin Quinnell, a Cornishman in Bristol, of which I can relate, it illustrates our summer perfectly, better than any info graphic I have seen on weather. The image, called Solargraph, shows bright lines which represent the path of the sun for a day. The gaps in the lines represent overcast days, the gaps in the line show where the sun disappeared behind cloud. It is a truly perfect graphic photograph.

They are all made from old bits of projects, make ready's, postcards, letterpressed leaflets etc, apart form the one made from an old customs form (which might be my favourite!). If you want a set of unique badges like this made just email me and for 5 english pounds you can get a set of 7 custom made badges.

My fourth post of the day and it isn't even midday yet! These are the Christmas cards I've been screen printing lately with the help of my girlfriend Amy. The text is hand rendered, along with the trees. They were all screen printed in a range of different colour ways over the weekend ready to send out this week. Which reminds me, I better get to the post office sharpish if anyone is going to see them!

These are some shots of the business cards that I've been screen printing at home recently. One is a simple double sided, square business card while the other is a folding card with a few greetings and details on. I've already handed quite a few out, I'm hoping they generate some work to justify the hours I've spent hunched over a desk printing them and cutting them out with a scalpel.

The notebook has been on and off of my screen bed a lot recently. I've been printing all kinds of self promotional materials; letterheads, business cards, envelopes, stickers etc. Hence the large amounts of logos now visible on the notebook. Might have to stop putting my logo onto the notebook, I don't want it to become too self indulgent! Keep your eyes peeled for a Christmas notebook update.

My fixed gear bike arrived today! I've taken her out for her maiden voyage, and a very wobbly maiden voyage it was too. Can't wait to get used to it and bomb all over Bristol courier style!

My hand in is tomorrow and here are the fruits of my labour; a CV and two covering letters on screen printed letterheads, a book of screen printed postcards and a screen printed envelope with detachable perforated contact details slip. There are also screen printed business cards which I'll do a separate post on when I get the chance. Right now it is time for a celebratory beer!

Christmas time has caught me unawares! Today I will be making amends for this problem by screen printing my own Christmas cards. Thanks to Vicky Newman for sending me her beautifully screen printed card via the YCN blog

I'm not sure how much blogging I'll be doing over the next week or so as my hand-in date at university approaches. I'll be up to my elbows in designing and printing various things, so apologies in advance!

The notebook is progressing nicely. I've started to notice how in thinking about and printing new layers I'm losing sight of the ones I liked at the bottom. They're still visible, just. I guess that is the nature of things. Loads of screen printing planned in the run up to Christmas so the notebook should look even busier next time you see it.

Today I, along with a load of other designers from U.W.E., took part in a design for social change workshop. Run by The Real Work Experience, and lead by Chris Clarke and Alex Ostrowski, two recent graduates from U.W.E., we discussed ideas of how students could use work experience to affect social change in the public sector. We proposed a Mobile Community Design Forum which could tour the country in an effort to open up a dialogue between design students and the public. The same workshop was being run in various places around the country at the same time, with each locations proposal being handed in at exactly 5. We await The Real Work Experience's decision as to who's proposal will win and be developed further.

Today I was lucky enough to take part in a workshop run by John Risseeuw of the Cabbagehead Press and Arizona State University in the U.S.A. at U.W.E.'s Print Centre. John ran us though some of his amazing work, explained his process of both working with type and making his own paper. He then showed us some lock-up tips on the Vandercook, including some great tricks for creating movement with type on your page. It was a great afternoon with a really nice guy. Whilst working on my letterpressed postcard I was fortunate enough to get some tips from John while he was preparing for this workshop and I look forward to getting any other information out of him during his 4 month post at U.W.E.

I have inky fingers! I have been getting dirty in the letterpress department at university in aid of self promotion. I'm producing a book of 8 postcards to give away as part of my self promotional package which I'll be sending out to designers/studios I want to work with in the future. Not quite sure what else will be in the package yet, but I will keep you posted!

After all the recent doom and gloom in the press about the credit crunch and our impending financial doom I decided to put my own message out there. I screen printed Everything will be ok in the end onto pages from the Financial Times and posted them up around Bristol city centre on a Sunday night ready for the Monday morning rat-race to see. It wasn't based on sound economic advice but hopefully it brought a smile to a few faces.

This year I've decided to use my notebook as a 'Make-ready'. Basically, Every time I screen print anything on my screen at home the very first print will be onto my notebook. As the year builds up it will become a kind of log of all the screen printing I have been doing from home. Periodically I will post up scans of the notebook so you can see how it is progressing.
